Why the Photo You Sent Won't Open on Their Device

The photo opens perfectly on your phone and not on theirs because it left your device as a HEIC, and their device has no way to read one. Which sending method you used decides whether that happened at all.

This guide is written from the sender’s side. Most advice on this subject tells the recipient how to install a codec, which is a strange thing to ask of someone who just wanted to look at a picture.

The short answer

Your iPhone stores photos as HEIC. Some ways of sending a photo convert it on the way out, and some hand over the original file untouched.

If you used one of the second kind, the recipient now has a file their computer does not recognise. Nothing is broken; the format simply never arrived anywhere it could be opened.

The fix is to send a JPEG instead, and there are three ways to arrange that.

What each sending method actually does

This is the part nobody tells you, and it explains why the problem seems random.

The pattern is that anything designed to reach a general audience converts, and anything designed to transfer a file faithfully does not.

So the complaint “it worked when I emailed it but not when I AirDropped it” is not a bug report. Those two paths genuinely behave differently, and both are behaving correctly.

The USB case, and the setting that fixes it

Copying photos to a Windows PC over a cable is the single most common way people hit this.

There is a setting for it that almost no guide mentions: Settings › Photos › Transfer to Mac or PC. Set to Automatic, iOS converts HEIC to JPEG as the files come across. Set to Keep Originals, it hands over the HEIC and leaves you to deal with it.

If your problem is specifically “I copied photos to my PC and they will not open”, that switch solves it permanently, without converting anything by hand.

Three ways to stop it happening

Convert before you send. Fastest for a handful of photos, and it needs nothing installed on anybody’s device. This works no matter which sending path you then use, because a JPEG stays a JPEG.

Change the camera setting. Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible makes every future photo a JPEG. It fixes the problem permanently and costs you storage, because JPEG files are roughly twice the size for the same picture. It does nothing for photos you have already taken. Pick a sending path that converts. Emailing the photo, or sending it through a messaging app, usually produces a JPEG at the other end. It costs you nothing to arrange, and costs the image some quality, because messaging apps compress aggressively.

When the thing you are sending is not a photograph

Not everything that goes into a message is a camera image, and the rules change when it is not.

A screenshot is already a PNG, so it opens everywhere and needs nothing done to it. The same goes for most diagrams, receipts and documents saved from apps.

Some images exist specifically in order to be sent to one other person. A relationship compatibility chart is a clean example — a tool like SynastryChart generates one from two people’s birth details, so being shared is the entire point of the file. What it produces is a flat graphic: fine lines, small labels, solid colour.

For that kind of image, do not convert to JPG on the way out. JPEG puts visible fuzz around text and thin lines, which is exactly where the information is. Send the PNG, or convert to WebP if the size is a problem. Our explainer on why screenshots are PNG and photos are HEIC covers the reasoning.

The rule is short: photographs convert to JPG, drawn things stay lossless.

Why not just tell them to install a codec?

It is the advice most search results give, and it is worth explaining why this guide does not.

On Windows, viewing HEIC in the Photos app needs the HEIF Image Extensions, and the HEVC decoding half of that has historically been a paid item in the Microsoft Store. Asking someone to visit a store and pay to look at a picture you sent them is not a reasonable request, however small the amount.

It also does not scale. You would have to make that request of every recipient, forever, and each of them would have to be the sort of person who installs codecs on request. Most are not, and the photo simply goes unopened.

Converting takes you about ten seconds and asks nothing of anybody. When you are the sender, the work belongs on your side.

Sending a whole album

One photo is easy. Forty is where the practical limits show up.

Email attachments generally cap out around 25 MB, which is roughly fifteen full-size photos and fewer if they are recent and large. Messaging apps have their own limits and compress hard to stay inside them.

Two things help. Convert the batch and download it as a single zip rather than attaching files individually — every converter here does that. And if the total is still too large, shrink the photos rather than splitting them across five emails: our HEIC compressor will hit a target size in KB or MB, and the HEIC resizer will cap the dimensions, which usually matters more than quality does for something being viewed on a phone.

A 1920-pixel-wide copy is indistinguishable from the original on any screen the recipient is likely to use, and a fraction of the size.

Sending to a group with mixed devices

One iPhone user in a group chat of Android phones is the classic case.

The temptation is to work out what each recipient can open. Do not bother. Convert once to JPG and send that to everybody.

A quality-85 JPEG comes out at roughly the same size as the HEIC it replaced — we measured 1.27 MB against 1.38 MB on a 12 megapixel photo — so you are giving up nothing measurable in exchange for a file that opens on every device made in the last thirty years.

What gets stripped on the way

Worth knowing, because it cuts both ways.

Messaging apps usually remove metadata, including the GPS coordinates. Good for privacy, bad if you wanted the date preserved.

AirDrop and cloud links keep everything, because they transfer the original file. That includes the location the photo was taken.

Converting in a browser — here or anywhere that re-encodes — drops the EXIF block entirely, because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels.

If you are on the receiving end

Sometimes you are the one holding the file that will not open. Three quick routes.

On Windows, install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or skip the codec entirely and convert — the full walkthrough is in opening HEIC files on Windows.

On Android, Google Photos will usually display it; the awkward part is uploading it somewhere that rejects the format, which converting HEIC to JPG on Android covers.

On a Mac, it just opens. macOS has understood HEIC since High Sierra.

The bottom line

The photo is fine. It left your phone in a format built for storing pictures efficiently, not for handing to strangers.

Convert to JPG before you send when it matters, change the camera setting if this happens often, and remember that email and messaging apps already do the conversion for you.

And when what you are sending was drawn rather than photographed — a chart, a diagram, a screenshot — leave it lossless. The compatibility problem you are solving does not apply to it, and JPEG will only take something away.

Frequently asked questions

Why can my friend not open the photo I sent?

Almost always because it arrived as a HEIC and their device has no HEVC decoder. Windows needs an extension from the Microsoft Store, older Android cannot open it at all, and plenty of applications refuse it regardless of the operating system.

Which sending method converts automatically?

Mail on an iPhone generally sends a JPEG, and messaging apps re-compress to JPEG as well. AirDrop and cloud links send the original HEIC untouched, which is why those are the ones that cause trouble.

Should I just turn HEIC off on my iPhone?

It fixes every future photo and none of the existing ones, and your library grows roughly twice as fast. It is the right move if you share photos constantly, and overkill if this happens twice a year.

Is converting to JPG worth it if the file gets bigger?

Yes, when someone else is involved. A quality-85 JPEG is roughly the same size as the HEIC it replaced, so you are paying nothing meaningful for a file that opens everywhere.

Does sending a photo remove its location data?

It depends on the path. Messaging apps usually strip metadata, AirDrop and cloud links usually keep it, and converting in a browser drops it because the image is rebuilt from pixels.

What about sending a screenshot or a chart?

Those are already PNG and open everywhere, so the compatibility problem does not arise. Just avoid converting them to JPG, which damages text and fine lines.

How do I send to a group with mixed devices?

Convert to JPG once and send that. Trying to serve each recipient the ideal format is more work than converting, and the file that opens for everyone is worth more than the file that is 10% smaller.

Are my files uploaded when I convert them here?
