Why you have a WebP file at all
Hardly anyone sets out to create one. You right-click an image on a website, choose save, and end up with a .webp — then something refuses to open it.
Sites serve WebP because it is smaller than PNG or JPEG at the same quality, so pages load faster. Your browser saves what the site sent. The file is not broken; it is simply newer than some of the software you now need to hand it to.
What still refuses to read it
Every current browser handles WebP, as do Photoshop 23 and later, Windows 11’s Photos app and macOS Preview.
The gaps are elsewhere: older Office documents, some content management systems, print workflows, and upload forms whose allow-list was written years ago and only ever mentioned JPG and PNG.
PNG will not improve the image
This is the single most common misunderstanding about converting WebP to PNG, and it is worth being blunt about.
What we measured
A photograph downloaded as a 282 KB WebP became a 2,262 KB PNG — eight times the size. We then decoded both files and compared them subpixel by subpixel: not one differed.
Eight times the bytes, the same picture. PNG stores pixels faithfully, but it can only store the pixels that are in the file, and the WebP had already discarded the rest.
Why people expect otherwise
“Lossless” sounds like “high quality”, and PNG is genuinely lossless. But lossless describes what a format does to the data it is given, not what it can recover from data it never received.
Converting a lossy WebP to PNG is like photocopying a photocopy onto better paper. The paper is better; the copy is not.
When converting WebP to PNG is the right call
Software that refuses the file
The honest, common reason. An application, a form or a colleague’s older toolchain will not take a WebP, and PNG is the format nothing has ever rejected.
You need the transparency
If the WebP has a transparent background, PNG is the correct target. It has an alpha channel, so nothing has to be painted in behind the image.
Converting the same file to JPG would force a solid colour into those areas — our WebP to JPG converter at least lets you choose which colour, but PNG avoids the problem entirely.
You are about to edit it
Older editors that cannot open WebP can all open PNG. Convert, edit, and export to whatever the final destination needs.
When not to bother
Do not convert WebP to PNG hoping for better quality, to save space, to put images on a website, or to archive an original. The WebP you already have is the smaller file and the same picture.
If the WebP was lossless, you get the original back
Not every WebP is lossy. WebP has a lossless mode, often used for logos, icons and interface artwork.
The round trip is exact
We converted a 138 KB PNG to a lossless WebP at 56 KB, then converted that back to PNG: 138 KB again, with the same pixels. Nothing was lost in either direction.
The file grows on the way back because PNG is simply less efficient, not because anything was recovered or damaged.
How to tell which kind you have
You usually cannot from the outside, and the extension is no help. A rough guide: photographs served by websites are almost always lossy, while logos and UI graphics are frequently lossless.
If it matters, convert and compare. If the PNG is only slightly larger than the WebP, it was probably lossless to begin with.
Animated WebP files
You get the first frame
A standard PNG holds exactly one image. There is nowhere for the rest of an animation to go.
Most converters return a still and say nothing, which looks like a bug. This tool reads the header first and flags animated files in the queue, so you find out before you download.
If you need the motion
APNG and GIF can both hold every frame, and tools built for animation will produce them. Your original WebP is untouched and still holds the full sequence.
Transparency comes through intact
Both WebP and PNG carry an alpha channel, so this conversion is the safe one for anything with a transparent background — logos, icons, product cut-outs, UI assets.
Nothing has to be decided and nothing has to be painted in. That is the practical difference between converting a WebP to PNG and converting it to JPG.

Read the queue before you convert
Animated files are flagged. If nothing is flagged, every file is a still and the conversion is straightforward.
Download
Take each PNG individually, or the whole batch as one ZIP. Your original WebP files are never modified.
The situations people actually arrive with
Four cases cover almost everyone who needs to convert WebP to PNG, and each one has a slightly different right answer.
An upload form rejected the file
Job portals, marketplaces, government services and older content systems frequently accept only JPG and PNG. The form gives an unhelpful error and no explanation.
PNG is the safe choice if the image has transparency; JPG is the smaller one if it does not. Either will be accepted.
You need it in a document or a slide deck
Word, PowerPoint, Google Slides and InDesign all vary in whether they take WebP, and older versions generally do not. Converting first avoids discovering the problem mid-deadline.
The image is a logo or an icon
This is where PNG earns its size. Transparency survives the conversion, and if the source was a lossless WebP you get the original back exactly.
You want to edit it
Older versions of Photoshop, Affinity, GIMP and most simple editors cannot open WebP but all open PNG. Convert, edit, then export to whatever the destination needs — ideally back to WebP if that destination is a website.
A case that is not on the list
Bulk-converting a folder of WebP images “to be safe” is worth avoiding. You multiply your storage for no gain, and the WebP files were already the more useful copies.

Going the other way is a much better trade: PNG to WebP has a genuinely lossless setting that still comes out smaller than the PNG.
What to do when the PNG is too big
Converting WebP to PNG multiplies the file size, and sometimes the destination that demanded PNG also has an upload limit. Three ways out, in order of preference.
Check whether you actually need PNG
If the image has no transparency, JPG is usually accepted anywhere PNG is, and it will be a fraction of the size. Transparency is the only thing PNG offers here that JPG does not.
Reduce the dimensions, not the format
A 4000-pixel-wide photograph does not need to be 4000 pixels wide in a form submission. Halving the width quarters the pixel count, and that shrinks a PNG far more reliably than any other change.
Compress to a target size
If the requirement is a specific byte budget, our image compressor searches for the quality that lands just under it, rather than making you guess at a slider. It outputs JPG or WebP, so it only helps when transparency is not required.
Before you send the file on
A converted PNG can still carry the metadata that came with the original — camera, timestamps, occasionally GPS coordinates. If the image is going to somebody else, it is worth a look.
You can remove EXIF data without re-encoding the picture, which matters here: this file has already been through one lossy encoder and does not need another.
Privacy: why this runs in your browser
The engine is WebAssembly running on your own machine. Files are never uploaded, never queued on a server, and never retained “for an hour” the way several competing converters state in their own terms.
For an image saved off a public website that may not matter. For a screenshot of something private it matters a great deal, and a tool should not behave differently depending on which one you happen to drop in.
The batch limits are honest for the same reason
Converting fifty files costs us nothing, because your processor does the work. No bandwidth bill means no quota to invent and no premium tier to sell you.
The one trade is that the first conversion waits a moment while the engine loads. After that it is entirely local, and it keeps working even if your connection drops mid-batch.
