Both formats are compact. HEIC is slightly smaller, but a JPG opens on far more devices — usually the more important factor when you convert HEIC to JPG.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, which means some image data is discarded to shrink the file. The good news is that at a high quality setting, the loss is invisible to the eye.

At a quality setting around 90, a converted JPG looks virtually identical to the original while taking up far less space.
How to choose the right quality
Leave the quality at 90 for everyday photos. Drop it toward 80 if you want the smallest possible files for email or the web, or push it to 100 when you need maximum fidelity for printing or editing.
What happens to transparent areas?
This is the one thing most converters won’t tell you: JPG cannot store transparency.
Transparent areas become a white background
If your HEIC image contains transparent pixels — for example a screenshot or a graphic — those areas are filled with a solid white background when you convert HEIC to JPG.
