HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the format Apple uses to store photos on iPhones and iPads.
A HEIC file is Apple’s high-efficiency photo format, used on iPhones since iOS 11 to store images at about half the size of JPEG.
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Since iOS 11, Apple made HEIC the default to save storage. It is efficient on your phone, but poorly supported elsewhere — which is exactly why converting HEIC to JPG is so common.

JPG (also written JPEG) is a raster image format that has been the standard for digital photos for decades.
JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world, using lossy compression to keep files small.

Because JPG has been around so long, essentially every device and app can open it. That universality is the whole point of a HEIC to JPG conversion.
JPG and file size
JPG trades some image data for a smaller file than an uncompressed image would be. Measured against HEIC, though, JPG is the less efficient of the two — it needs more bytes to reach the same visual quality.

File size
HEIC is the more efficient format by a wide margin — it stores the same picture in roughly half the bytes. In our own test, a 1.4 MB HEIC came back as a 1.7 MB JPG at quality 90.
You convert HEIC to JPG for compatibility, not to save space. A JPG opens on far more devices, and that is usually the more important factor.

JPG quality is adjustable. You choose how much compression to apply, which HEIC does not let you do on export.

Transparency
Neither HEIC nor JPG stores true transparency. If your image has transparent areas you need to keep, use PNG instead.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, which means some image data is discarded to shrink the file. The good news is that at a high quality setting, the loss is invisible to the eye.
Our converter defaults to a quality of 85. On a 12 MP test photo that produced a JPG roughly the same size as the original HEIC, with no visible difference. Push the slider to 95 or 100 and the JPG can end up several times larger than the file you started with.
Converting HEIC to JPG buys you compatibility, not a smaller file. At high quality settings the JPG is usually larger than the HEIC it came from.
How to choose the right quality
Leave the quality at 85 for everyday photos. Drop it to 75 or 80 when you want a clearly smaller file for email or the web — on our test photo, quality 75 cut the JPG to about 60% of the original HEIC.
Push it to 100 only when you need maximum fidelity for printing or editing, and expect a file several times larger than the HEIC.
What happens to transparent areas?
This is the one thing most converters won’t tell you: JPG cannot store transparency.
Transparent areas become a white background
If your HEIC image contains transparent pixels — for example a screenshot or a graphic — those areas are filled with a solid white background when you convert HEIC to JPG.
